Available Treatments
LJTphysio provides individualised rehabilitation programmes based on client need and often a combination of treatments will give the best results. After an Initial Consultation LJT will recommend a treatment plan which will be discussed with you in detail.
LJTphysio treats a huge and varied range of Musculoskeletal and Orthopaedic conditions affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joints. So whether you sustained an injury or have a long-term condition that requires management LJTphysio is here to help you.
Acupuncture is one of several treatment options available at LJTphysio which aims to control pain and inflammation. It is part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which dates back approximately 3000 years. The mechanism of Acupuncture is still not fully understood but it is believed it works by releasing natural pain-relieving chemicals via stimulation of the nervous system which reduces pain, increases blood flow which in turn aids healing. What Can I Expect? Acupuncture entails gently piercing the skin at acupuncture points which are located all over the body, using single-use, sterile needles. Your Physiotherapist will decide which of many points to use after conducting the initial consultation and identifying a cause of pain. The number of needles used will vary depending on your condition and will stay in situ for 20-30 minutes. What is trigger point therapy? Trigger point therapy is slightly different whereby needles are used to relax tight muscles after injuries and in long-term muscular conditions. Acupuncture needles are inserted directly into the muscle involved until the soft tissue relaxes at which point the needle is removed. This is often a much quicker treatment than acupuncture and does not require 20-30 minutes. A combination of traditional acupuncture and trigger point therapy may be used if indicated. Is Acupuncture Painful? Occasionally there may be a sharp feeling when the needle is inserted which tends to settle quickly, otherwise acupuncture is usually comfortable. Your Physiotherapist may stimulate the needles to produce a feeling of “De Qi” which some describe as achy, warm, or a feeling of energy flowing under the skin. Muscles may be sore for a few hours after trigger point therapy, but generally significant pain relief is gained afterwards. Is Acupuncture suitable for me? There are no absolute contraindications to acupuncture unless you are needle phobic or allergic to metal. However, precaution must be taken when treating clients with heart problems, epilepsy, those on anticoagulant medications, pregnant women and people with immune system deficiency. You will be required to fill out a consent form prior to acupuncture treatment which will highlight any issues for the Physiotherapist to consider.

Electrotherapy
Ultrasound creates sound waves via mechanical vibration to reduce pain with the added benefit of healing tissues such as ligaments, tendons, joint capsule and scar tissue. Heat and vibration are transferred to the damaged tissue which stimulates chemical reactions within the cells to encourage healing. What Can I Expect? Ultrasound is generally pain-free; however some heat can be generated during treatment. TENS TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a mode of electrotherapy delivered by a battery powered handheld device to alleviate pain. Self-adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin and electrical impulses are sent to the nerve fibres which block pain signals, whilst releasing natural pain-relieving hormones. Treatment can be provided in clinic or at home for a small fee to cover electrodes and a refundable deposit for the machine rental. Are There Any Side effects? There is no nausea or drowsiness associated with TENS as there may be with medications. The impulses only travel 1-2 inches below the skin and is perfectly safe unless you have a cardiac condition, pacemaker or are pregnant.

Taping
The mechanism of taping is not 100% clear, however there is some evidence to show that the tape provides sensory feedback to the local area and potentially to the brain, causing feel good chemicals to be released. Research shows that it is unlikely that the tape will alter biomechanics or increase/decrease muscle activation as previously thought. Tape often increases clients confidence and may be a short term solution alongside long term rehabilitation to ease symptoms. LJTphysio predominantly uses the colourful kinesiology tape as it provides minimal side effects and is kind to skin, however some sporting injuries will involve more rigid tape.

Manual Therapy
Manual therapy (hands-on treatment) is graded depending on whether pain or stiffness is more of a predominant factor. This feeling can range from gentle oscillations to more intense manipulation to suit your individual condition and tolerance. It was previously thought that manual therapy altered biomechanics, however current research points toward sensory feedback to the brain releasing feel good chemicals and relief of symptoms. Post-treatment sorenesst is common but should not last more than 24 hours. It is important to tell your Physiotherapist if your pain worsened significantly so treatment can be modified accordingly.

Exercise

Education
Physiotherapists are experts in exercise prescription which is very important for long term recovery or management. Whether you need to stretch, strengthen, mobilise, stabilise, load or work your cardiovascular system, LJTphysio has the skills to create an individualised exercise regime for you. All home exercise programmes are sent via email where clients can see images, videos, repetitions, sets and frequency of exercises making it easier to remember your rehab. No excuses!
Whether you have a long term condition or an acute injury it is important that you understand your problem and how to help yourself alongside your Physiotherapy treatment. LJTphysio is committed to educating clients and giving you the tools to manage your symptoms with long term self management strategies.

Massage

Pilates
Massage can be beneficial as part of a comprehensive Physiotherapy treatment package depending on your condition. LJTphysio is trained in deep tissue, Swedish, sports and trigger point release massage techniques. The type of massage will depend on the outcome of the Initial Consultation as not all techniques are suitable for all conditions and commonly a combination of all may be used.
Pilates is a form of exercise which focuses on strengthening the spine, increasing stability, flexibility, endurance, postural and body awareness whilst correcting muscle imbalance. Controlled upper and lower limb movements are added to challenge these “core” muscles further with a variety of different exercises. LJTphysio is trained by the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI) and offers Pilates on a 1:1 basis. An Initial Consultation will be carried out to discuss your level of experience and goals that you would like to achieve from Pilates.
**Some treatments may not be suitable for clients with certain medical conditions - LJTphysio reserves the right to refuse certain techniques
